McHenry County, IL (2024)

BACKSTORY

McHenry County is known for proactive road maintenance and innovation in Illinois’s District 1. It’s no surprise that they partnered with Gallagher to take the next steps in roadway cost-savings, rehabilitation, and asset management to pave, recycle, and construct more roadways to give back the most to their community. What started as a Demonstration Project has turned into a budding partnership of processes.

AGENCY PROBLEM

McHenry County had an elevation problem. They needed to repave several roadways in their resurfacing program without changing the cross-sectional slope of the road. In fact, they needed to keep the elevation the same AND widen the roadway. They traditional solution for this would be an expensive, four-to-five-inch, mill and overlay with a widening process after the roadway is milled. McHenry knew there had to be a more thoughtful way to keep the roadway the same elevation, improve the intermediate courses, and widen the road. In steps Gallagher Asphalt’s Hot In-Place Recycling team.

Gallagher Solutions

Gallagher offered the perfect solution for McHenry County’s problem. Rather than pay the extra dollars for the deeper milling and thicker overlaying, Gallagher and McHenry crafted an excellent plan to utilize Hot In-Place Recycling for the Intermediate Course (Binder Course). McHenry milled off the surface course, widened the road, Gallagher recycled the binder course while tying into the new, wider, asphalt shoulders, and McHenry completed a standard overlay. The whole process saved 40% compared to the traditional method that was originally engineered. Through teamwork, the best solution was achieved for the County!
